The Attack On New York City

Two commercial airliners crashed into the landmark, twin towers, eventually causing the thunderous collapse of both buildings.

The suicidal flights - both hijacked American Airlines planes with a total of 156 people aboard - hit the two buildings within 30 minutes of each other in the early morning.

The 110-story buildings were the center of international trade and housed commercial and retail tenants.

About 50,000 people were estimated to work in the towers.

Several buildings around the towers also collapsed. The World Trade Center complex, situated in lower Manhattan, was made up of seven buildings
